Internal Audit
One of the fall-outs from recent large-scale corporate failures
is a heightened awareness of the importance of internal audit in
reinforcing effective governance. The reporting lines for internal
audit, its organization structure, its mandate and the effectiveness
of staff selection, training and development are all important elements
in any strengthening program. A strong internal audit unit will
reinforce and support management in its monitoring of performance
by testing adherence to policy, procedures, accounting, internal
controls and reporting requirements. It will include technical competence
to confirm appropriate management of technology and communications
installations and related risks. Its perspective will be that of
containment risks and providing assurances. The role of internal
audit is to support management. It does this by providing assurances.

Investigations
Investigations are performed when there is reason to request external,
independent assistance to determine the facts of a situation where
concern has been expressed over what is happening in an organization.
Normally, there is some suspicion that financial irregularities
have taken place. There is a need for clarification on a discrete

upon as a basis for management action to quell or respond to the
suspicion on an appropriate basis.
